Piping devices come in many shapes and sizes. In fact, there is a small, but, an important device called a stainless steel nipple that can control flow from one valve/pipe to another valve/pipe. It connects ball valves, bearing accessories, brass valves, butterfly valves, ceramic valves, check valves etc.
What Are Pipe Nipples?
A pipe nipple is a fitting that is constructed from a piece of pipe. It can be stainless steel, carbon metal or another substance. A stainless steel nipple or carbon nipple has threads on each end that are used to connect two other fittings or pipe. When measuring, the length of the nipple includes the threaded area at each end. The piece is turned into place with a wrench on the hexagonal section of the nipple. Some nipples do not have this hexagonal area and these nipples need to be turned with a special nipple wrench. Nipples can have ends with different sizes categorizing them as reducer or unequaled nipples.
The Various Threading Standards
There are many stainless steel nipple sizes and a pipe chart should aid you in buying the right one. Various grades of stainless steel are used in making the right device to support your piping. You should take into account the threading used, whether it is of the right standard or not. Nipple threading includes National Pipe Threads (NPT), British Standard Pipe Threads (BSPT), as well as sourcing of Metric Threads upon request.
